What to do after a work injury
These steps protect your health and your claim.
1. Get medical care
Go to the emergency room or a doctor right away. Tell the provider the injury happened at work.
2. Report it to your employer
Tell your supervisor as soon as possible, in writing if you can, and keep a copy.
3. Choose your doctor
You have the right to choose your treating doctor, who must be BWC-certified. You can change doctors later.
4. File the claim
A claim can be filed with the Ohio BWC by you, your doctor, or your employer. The deadline is generally one year from the injury.
5. Be careful what you sign
Your employer can require a limited medical release, not an open-ended one. Have broad releases and statements reviewed first.
6. Call a lawyer early
A short call now can prevent problems with wages, treatment, and denials later.

- You are sent to an IME with a doctor hired by the other side.
